What kind of slip rings are needed in the offshore oil exploration and production industry?

Oil and gas exploration equipment is an important part of China’s high-end equipment manufacturing industry. At the same time, slip rings are also installed in many places on the equipment in this field. As a professional slip ring manufacturer, JINPAT also often designs and manufactures corresponding slip rings for offshore oil and gas exploration industry equipment. In this article, we will deeply analyze what slip rings are used in the lower deck of oil and gas exploration equipment.

In the equipment industry, the equipment on the drill pipe usually needs to go down to the water thousands of meters deep in the sea. In order to meet the power output of the drill pipe, a high voltage of at least 2500V must be used to achieve the purpose of long-distance transmission. Slip rings similar to oil drilling platforms and deep-sea exploration robot control center slip rings used on oil and gas exploration ships also increase the rated working voltage of the slip rings to 2500V in order to ensure the power supply of underwater robots that go thousands of meters deep into the seabed.

Whether it is the slip ring of a deep-sea exploration robot or the slip ring on the drill pipe of an oil drilling platform, both are high-voltage slip rings, and both use carbon brushes and copper rings for contact; but the required rated current is very small. For example, the slip ring on the drill pipe of a drilling platform only has a current of 120A. the current path of the slip ring of a seabed exploration robot is only about 20A per circuit. So, are there any slip rings with higher voltage and larger current in the equipment of the oil and gas exploration industry? Yes, such slip rings are slip rings for pod-type electric thrusters.

Pod electric propulsion is commonly used in luxury cruise ships, scientific research ships, oil drilling platforms and other ship platforms. Why is it called a pod propulsion slip ring? Because this type of propulsion directly uses a motor to drive the propeller forward. The motor and propeller are hoisted and installed at the stern of the ship. The reason why it is called a rudder propeller is related to the ability of 360° wireless rotation given by the slip ring.

The slip rings installed on the podded electric propulsion system are usually rated at several thousand amperes to meet the high power requirements of the propulsion system. For example, the 3MW podded electric propulsion system slip ring developed by JINPAT has a designed rated current of 4000A.
